Abiy Ahmed Secures Second Term as Ethiopia Forms New Government
Prosperity Party sweeps general elections with 438 seats as country hails a peaceful, transparent democratic transition
ADDIS ABABA – Ethiopia has entered a new political chapter with the formation of its new Federal Government.
At the first regular inaugural session of the 7th House of Peoples’ Representatives held in Addis Ababa, H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed was elected as Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia for another five-year term.
The election follows the 7th General Elections, which were conducted peacefully with over 54 million registered voters. The ruling Prosperity Party secured a decisive majority, winning 438 of the 486 contested seats in the House.
The polls were held across 1,139 constituencies, including 501 for the House of Peoples’ Representatives and 638 for regional councils. The electoral process was endorsed as transparent and credible by international observer missions, including the African Union (AU) and IGAD.
In his inaugural address, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed described the election as an event “tested and refined like gold through fire,” which has ultimately strengthened Ethiopia’s democratic culture despite numerous challenges.
He noted that while winning and losing are natural in any democratic contest, “Ethiopia has no losing children, only winners.”
“We can overcome our national obstacles only when we move forward hand-in-hand as brothers,” the Prime Minister said.
He added that Ethiopia’s influential and leading status in the East African region is not a result of charity, but has been secured through its own strength, resilience, and popular foundation. He affirmed that Ethiopia will continue to serve as a firm anchor for regional peace and stability.
Congratulating the new government, H.E. Dr. Oumer H. Oba, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Pakistan, felicitated Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the parliamentary leadership, and members of the House upon taking their official oaths for the five-year term.
“The formation of the new government reflects the strength of Ethiopia’s democracy and the people’s firm commitment to democratic norms and values,” the Ambassador said.
He wished the Ethiopian nation continued peace, prosperity, and development, with greater unity and cohesion in society.
